Rosemary is the chair of Arthritis Care’s board of trustees. She was originally elected to the Scotland Committee where she still holds the post of treasurer. She joined the board as one of two Scotland Committee representatives in 1997 having previously been involved with Young Arthritis Care and was appointed vice chair in 2004. In 2007 Rosemary was elected chair of the board and currently also chairs the organisation’s national/regional chairs, trustees and directors committee.
Prior to joining Arthritis Care, Rosemary worked for over 10 years with Her Majesty’s Forces and for a number of years in the hotel industry. She is a commited advocate for people with arthritis and currently also serves as trustee for the Edinburgh Centre for Integrated Living.
Ann is the North England Region Committee representative. She joined the board in 2004 following years of local service as a volunteer in all aspects of Arthritis Care’s services. In 2007 Ann was elected vice-chair of the board and also chairs the organisation's operations and resources committee.
Ann is also an accredited tutor/assessor for the Expert Patient Programme. She currently helps run the family businesses with her husband.
Roy was elected honorary joint treasurer in 2001 and has served as sole treasurer since 2004. He currently chairs both the audit committee and the investments working group.
Roy is a certified accountant who has previously worked at board level in industry and commerce. For the past 15 years he has occupied various senior posts in the charity sector including director of finance for the Cancer Research Campaign, trustee and honorary treasurer to Relate National, and non-executive director for Buckinghamshire Mental Health Trust.
Recently, Roy has cut back his portfolio to devote his time to his trusteeships of Arthritis Care and the British Homeopathic Association.
Chrystal Carmichael has been a member of Arthritis Care for the past 37 years and at present she is the Chair of Glasgow South Branch. Chrystal originally started as a volunteer driver, and within the first year became the Branch Secretary, a post she held for the next 29 years, before becoming the current Chair. At present she is also Vice-Chair for the South Central Scotland Area Laison Committee. Chrystal joined the Scotland Committee 6 years ago, and had been the Chair for the past 4 years, before being elected as Trustee for Scotland in April 2009. During her time on the Scotland Committee she has sat on various task groups and presently she is the Health and Safety Champion for Scotland . Chrystal originally became involved with Arthritis Care, because she was the main carer for a parent who had rheumatoid arthritis, who was also a Branch Member. She has been involved with the Red Cross, where she used to run the Handicapped Children's Group, as well as being the Honorary Treasurer of the West of Scotland Mobility Group. She currently volunteers at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.
Mary is representative and chair of the Wales Committee and acting vice chair of the board of trustees. She joined the board in 1999 and currently chairs the organisation’s public affairs committee and young persons and families advisory group.
Mary came to the organisation from Young Arthritis Care where she was an appointed volunteer. Her background is in management, governance and disability awareness and she was a founder of the first national non-disease specific patient representative group in Wales. She is currently studying for a BA in Health and Social Care and is also a patient group advisor on the National Joint Registry Steering Committee.
Ann is a directly elected trustee who joined the board in 2006. She is currently chair of the joint negotiating committee.
During a career in the civil service which lasted over 25 years, Ann was responsible for setting up the transport provisions of the Disability Discrimination Act. She now works as an independent consultant specialising in mobility needs and as a visiting professor for the department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at University College London. Ann also serves as a trustee of both Mobility Choice and the Volunteer Centre Westminster.
Richard has been a directly elected trustee since 1997. He is currently a consultant rheumatologist at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth. Along with Dr David Doyle, Richard is one of two highly experienced rheumatologists on Arthritis Care’s board of trustees. He has previously worked with the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance (ARMA), is a former convener of the British Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology (BSPAR), and is a former member of the council of the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR).
David is the Northern Ireland Committee representative and chair of the organisation’s pensions committee and joint negotiating committee. He joined the board in 2006 after five years with Arthritis Care as a training volunteer. David became involved with the organisation after completing a Challenging Arthritis course and remains a firm advocate of training services. Prior to joining the organisation David had a successful career in the civil service.
Chris is the South West Region Committee representative. She joined the board in 2006 building on almost 20 years of involvement with the organisation. In 1987 Chris became a committee member of the Salisbury branch and in 2002 she co-founded the Amesbury branch.
Prior to her retirement Chris worked at the Ministry of Defence and, in addition to her work as a trustee, is also an Arthritis Care information volunteer.
Kathleen is the Central England Committee representative and was until recently chair of the committee. She co-founded the Lichfield branch in 1990 and has been its chair since 1995. In 1998 Kathleen was elected chair of the Shropshire/Staffordshire Area Liaison Committee and in 2004 was elected to represent her region on the board of trustees.
Kathleen, who was diagnosed with arthritis at 19 years of age, went on to a lengthy career in child care at a senior level. Since her retirement she has worked at board level for a number of public sector organisations and currently devotes her time to her work with Arthritis Care.
Samantha is a specially appointed trustee who joined the board in 2006. She is currently chief executive of the British Society for Rheumatology (BSR) and British Health Professionals in Rheumatology. Samantha has had extensive experience within the charity sector with proven success in generating growth, fostering cultural change and developing engagement in public affairs. She is also an amateur poet and in 2005 won a Bridport Prize for her poem Winter Walking on Hampstead Heath.
Terry is the South East Region Committee representative who joined the board in February 2008. He is also a member of the Haywards Heath branch and is the current Chair. For the past 12 years Terry has worked for Bridgestone in a variety of sales and marketing roles. He is currently in charge of developing the UK truck retread market for the company and half way through a five year project of growing this business. Terry is also an active member of his local Methodist church.
Dr Karen Willson came onto the board on 16 September 2009. She has over 15 years experience working within life sciences and engineering working in academia and a large pharmaceutical organisation, She has completed training at the London Business School and is currently working at the London development Agency managing EU funded projects across London.
