In February 2006 the Arthritis Care board agreed unanimously to withdraw from providing hotel services. This was not only a financial decision, though there had been significant losses. There was a clear desire to focus on activities that would achieve a greater benefit for more people with arthritis.
The Board made clear their desire to sell the hotels as going concerns, but of course the legal position is that any sale must be shown to deliver best value for the charity and its beneficiaries.
After extensive marketing, two of the hotels were sold as going concerns – Orton Rigg in Poole and New Mayfair in Blackpool. Both are still welcoming members of Arthritis Care.
Unfortunately, it was not possible to find a hotelier to purchase the Burnlea Hotel in Largs. The only other option to fulfill our legal obligation of achieving best value has been to sell it for development and this process is now underway. The hotel closed for business on 24 May 2008.
At Lovat Lodge in Nairn, a local group formed a new charity that hopes to purchase the hotel. The Board has given them time to develop fundraising and a business plan.
