For people with arthritis, free access to hydrotherapy is an essential aspect of an integrated service to people with rheumatic disease.
Hydrotherapy promotes relaxation, relieves pain, assists movement and enables exercise. It can also help prevent arthritis from getting worse. The NHS recommends aerobic exercise for 20 minutes two or three times a week.
Hydrotherapy is a key component in enabling many people with arthritis to undertake such exercise. In a climate in which ‘active ageing’ is being promoted it seems unfortunate that a therapy that could enable people with arthritis to be more active is so difficult to access.
