Why write?

Living with arthritis can be tough. It can be hard to understand your own feelings, let alone try and explain them to someone else. Writing is a great way to let your imagination run wild, take your mind off things, or help you to clarify how you’re feeling. Best of all, it’s cheap and you don’t even need to leave the house.

Getting started

Staring at a blank piece of paper can be daunting. Here are some tips to help you free your thoughts and start writing.

  • Pick a quiet time and place where you can write without interruptions.
  • If writing is painful, try typing, using an ergonomic pen or talking into a tape recorder.
  • Carry a notepad so you can write down thoughts and ideas as they occur to you.
  • Try to write freely, without listening to your inner critic, and go back later and edit what you’ve written with a fresh eye.
  • Stop writing for the day when you still have more to say – that way you’ll know where to start when you come back to what you’re working on.
