This is the winning entry of the Arthritis Care creative writing competition 2009, by Lorraine Newark.

Sssh…

Sssh! I’m sneaking out

Last night I packed my case with all my favourite holiday in secret

I haven’t told my lodger, she would only want to come too

I want to do this alone

My lodger is clingy, needy and demands my attention

She is unpleasant, spiky and unreasonable

Altogether not nice to be around

I’m so excited

It’s early in the morning; I’m out of the door and in the taxi on the way to the airport. Sun, sea and sangria here I come

My lodger hasn’t stirred

She doesn’t know I’ve gone

Bliss, I’m on the plane

There were no desperate pleas from my lodger before I boarded

She is still not aware

I’m not going to talk to her while I’m away

Now the fun begins – the sun is out and I feel great!

Oh the sea is lovely and warm, so relaxing

I’m enjoying myself, chatting and laughing with friends

My lodger isn’t there to interrupt or bring me down

I’ve made a decision. I’m not going back!

Have told my lodger she can stay in my house but on my terms

Will only meet every now and again

She must play by my rules now

This is my house, my body

She is just a lodger, a condition that causes pain.

This is the life, I feel alive!

Full of energy, vibrant and vivacious.

This is how I always want to be.

This is how I always will be

This is how I am.

This is me!
