Throughout 2005 Arthritis Care in Central England ran a series of Preparing for Work courses in East Anglia. The courses were aimed at people of working age who had arthritis or a similar condition and were out of work.

One hundred and twenty people signed up to the courses, which aimed to help participants learn how to manage their condition, and also to teach them job searching skills.

‘I’ve told my doctor and my JobCentre Plus advisor how good the course is. I’d recommend it to anyone,’ are the words of one participant from the Peterborough course. This was typical of the comments that participants made, and one of the reasons why the course leaders found running the courses so fulfilling.

John Simpson, one of the course leaders, said, ‘It was just amazing to see the changes in the participants as the weeks went by. Their confidence grew and they became more self-assured. I found delivering the job search skills session was one of the most rewarding experiences for me. It's really great to see everyone on the course progressing.’

The courses were funded by the European Social Fund (ESF), and run in partnership with Jobcentre Plus. Arthritis Care is now looking for funding to deliver these types of courses throughout the rest of the country.
