What is Preparing for Work?

Preparing for Work courses run over an eight-week period with one three hour session each week. It is delivered by two course leaders - usually training volunteers who have arthritis. A course will have a maximum of 18 participants all of whom have arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Preparing for Work courses are aimed at people with arthritis or fibromyalgia who are interested in starting or returning to work, but who may have concerns about how they will cope.

During the course, participants learn a wide range of techniques to help them and their condition. These include all the aspects of a Challenging Arthritis course such as:

  • what is arthritis and fibromyalgia?
  • managing pain
  • symptom management
  • exercise
  • healthy eating
  • working better with health professionals
  • action planning
  • problem solving
  • depression
  • coping with emotions
  • evaluating treatments

The course then goes on to look at aspects relating to finding and securing work including:

  • job search skills
  • completing application forms
  • interview techniques
