On 2 June 2009 Arthritis Care in Central England held a volunteer  conference at Hothorpe Hall, Leicestershire.

Double celebration

The date was planned to coincide with Volunteers’ Week in recognition of the achievements of all our volunteers and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Volunteers’ Week.

Message from CEO

Neil Betteridge, Arthritis Care’s chief executive sent a message of gratitude to the volunteers. He said: "Without our volunteers, Arthritis Care would only be able to reach a tiny minority of people with arthritis in the regions and nations.

Their work helps us reach out to the many people with arthritis in Central England, helping them with better services through our campaigning work, better self-management of their condition through our training courses, better awareness of arthritis generally through our information work, and local peer support from our volunteers in branches and groups across the region."

Keynote speaker

The programme included a keynote presentation from Dr Ronald Jubb, consultant rheumatologist at the Selly Oak Hospital. He reflected on the progress in the field of rheumatology in the last 25 years.

It was fascinating to learn about the advancements in medical technology, treatments and attitudes over the two decades.

Time to talk

The day’s programme allowed plenty of time for everyone to chat, catch up with colleagues from the more distant counties; to exchange experiences, give support and inspiration to new fellow volunteers.

The enchanting, rural location of Hothorpe Hall and the glorious sunshine on the day was an added bonus. Some of the comments from the volunteers included:

"Really enjoyed the layout of the day – can’t wait for the next one"

"Splendid venue, organisation smooth and efficient, thanks for the weather!"
