Arthritis Care in Scotland’s information service has received a big boost from the Big Lottery Fund (BLF). The grant from the BLF has been matched by funds from Arthritis Care branches in Glasgow North, Glasgow South and Aberdeen.
This follows on from our successful project which saw volunteers distributing printed information on arthritis through a variety of outlets including hospital information points, GP surgeries and others.
We know that Arthritis Care’s helpline and our printed information are useful to people in the 60+ age group. However we recognise that there are other ways to get the message to them.
We are looking at the best way to get information about diet, exercise and pain management to people in this age group in a way they can use it best to improve their condition.
We have developed presentations on exercise and arthritis, eating healthily with arthritis, and coping with pain, which we want to give to groups of people who are mostly in the 60+ age group. The presentations are based on our booklets, and fall into three parts. The first is a brief introduction to the work of Arthritis Care, followed by an overview of what people with arthritis can do to eat healthily/ increase their activity or manage their pain. The final part is an interactive discussion about how arthritis can get in the way of being active, eating healthily, or coping with pain, and how people can get round these problems. The presentations are delivered by trained volunteers, who have experience of living with arthritis.
We are able to deliver the presentation to groups of older people across Scotland at no cost to the group. If you are a member of a group and would like more information please call Katy Green on 0141 954 7776 or email KatyG@arthritiscare.org.uk.
