Orkney branch of Arthritis Care celebrated 21 years of supporting people with arthritis in the islands on 4 June with a special dinner in the Royal British Legion, Kirkwall. The present chair, Kathleen Moodie, welcomed a large number of members and volunteers to the event.
Kathleen gave a special welcome to Pauline Hunt, the first chair of the branch, and the original members of the committee and Judy O’Connor, the first Arthritis Care visitor. The branch's new honorary president Councillor Alistair Gordon and his wife Elaine, who is involved in the training courses in Orkney provided by Arthritis Care, were also present.
Both Pauline and Judy spoke of their many memories in setting up the branch, how they promoted Arthritis Care in the islands and what was achieved in the early days. Interest in the branch has kept up well throughout the past 21 years and membership now remains around 70-80 in number.
Members still enjoy the monthly meetings with the various mix of speakers and local entertainmentand new members are always welcomed.
Contact Arthritis Care's Scotland office if you would like to find out more about the branch.
