Margaret Davey, branch member of Romsey Arthritis Care, shows Sandra Gidley, MP,  the difficulties she has in accessing the waiting room at her local train station.

To raise 'arthritis awareness' MPs were asked to shadow a person with arthritis for a day to see what difficulties they encountered. Margaret Davey from the Romsey branch of Arthritis Care took her local MP, Sandra Gidley,  to Romsey train station where they encountered a catalogue of problems

  • there was a delivery van parked in the only disabled parking bay located next to the station entrance
  • there wasn’t a drop kerb to allow a wheelchair user to mount the pavement from the disabled car parking space
  • the steep steps to access the underpass to the other platform was not feasible for anyone in a wheelchair or anyone who has a mobility problem
  • the ticket office only had the standard height ticket kiosk
  • the Waiting Room door handle knobs proved too difficult for Margaret to grab and twist to open
  • Margaret and her walking aid tripod could not fit through the single opening door to the waiting room

Siobhain McCurrach, Area Development Manager, organised eight MP shadowing days in all, and it is hoped that this experience will help MPs to become more aware of the problems faced by people with arthritis.
