Jamie Oliver inspired restaurant, Fifteen Cornwall had mammoth access difficulties to overcome because it is built on the side of the cliff overlooking Newquay. Overcome them they did, as Sharon Kilty our information services manager for the south west found out.
'At first I was a little apprehensive when I saw the stairs I was about to descend but the staff were very reassuring' said Sharon.
For wheel chair users and those with limited mobility, they have a Stairmate Major stair lift, which takes you down the stairs to the front of the restaurant.
Once you reach the front of the restaurant, everything else is on the flat. There is good access to the tables and toilets and all the staff have received disability awareness training.
It is necessary to book in advance as Fifteen is a very popular restaurant and the staff need to be able to get the stair lift out for you before you arrive. This really is an example to others that most access issues are surmountable if you are prepared to put in the time and money to solve it.
