If you have a long-term condition and are looking for ways to cope, this course could be for you. You may have been recently diagnosed, you may have been living with your condition for some time, or someone close to you may be affected. If you feel in need of help, Challenging Your Condition is suitable for any point in your adult life.

‘I have gone from feeling isolated, helped and desperate to making a positive start on learning how to manage the rest of my life’

Ok, how long does it go on?

The course consists of a two-and-a-half-hour session once a week for six weeks (in an accessible venue). It is a small commitment for something that could make a big difference.

So what happens?

The weekly sessions consist of informative talks by the trainers, general discussion, brainstorming and practical activities. The trainers all have a long-term condition themselves, so can empathise easily.

What is covered over the six weeks?

Whilst there won’t be any disease-specific information, you will cover all of the following:

  • Pain management – we look at ways of coping with pain and practice a number of specific techniques
  • Healthy lifestyle – we explore at the benefits of exercise and healthy eating
  • Communication skills – we explore how you can communicate with your healthcare team, family and friends to explain your feelings and your needs, and how better communication can help improve relationships
  • Positive thinking – we look at the difficult emotions that are inevitably come with having a long term condition, how to deal with them and have a brighter outlook
  • Fatigue – we discuss methods of energy conservation
  • Problem solving and goal setting – throughout the course we help you to set your own action plan, helping you work towards your own personal goal.
  • Accessing information – we discuss how to obtain information and resources locally

And what will it cost me?

All our courses are free to attend. We obtain funding from various bodies which covers our running costs. This in fact serves as another guarantee of quality as we have to evaluate and feedback to our funders to show how each course went.

If it’s free, how do I know it’s any good?

One reason: evidence shows the course works. The feedback we get shows people are able to stay positive and take greater control of their own lives. Read for yourself what our participants have to say.

It sounds great, how can I sign up?

Take a look at our course calendar and use the information there to complete our form. If there isn’t anything available near you, please still send us your form. This means we can keep track of demand and keep you up to date with announcements of any new courses.
