How is diabetes treated?

Being diagnosed with diabetes means looking after your health has become even more important. People with diabetes often need additional treatments to making lifestyle changes such as medication to control their diabetes, blood pressure and blood fats as well as making lifestyle changes.

What tablets are there for treating type 2 diabetes?

Many people with Type 2 diabetes take diabetes tablets. They are not the same as insulin. Insulin cannot be taken in tablet form because it would be broken down in the stomach before it could work. Diabetes tablets work in different ways to lower blood glucose levels - for example by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin, or by helping the body to use the insulin that it does produce more effectively. Your doctor might start you on a tablet called Metformin, which is the most commonly used medication.
