Publication Date: 24 November 2008

Every year the Daily Telegraph chooses three charities for its readers to support as part of its Christmas appeal.

The selection process is never easy and this year over a hundred charities applied, which is why we are pleased and proud to have been chosen in 2008. The Appeal runs throughout December and is hugely important to us as we rely on donations to provide help to people in pain.

60 years of commitment

For over 60 years Arthritis Care has been passionately committed to helping people with arthritis, and fighting to combat the many myths surrounding the condition. There are nine million people with arthritis in the UK, and they range in age from toddlers to the elderly. Arthritis Care helps people via several channels, from its award-winning helplines, innovative website, volunteer support network, campaigns and self- management courses.

Huge demand

Our work in raising awareness of the condition has resulted in a 155% increase in demand for information and publications, and a 50% increase in calls to the helplines – showing that there is a demand for our services that is rapidly growing. The Telegraph appeal will help to raise money to fund our work and enable us to reach those people who need us. Obviously the more people who know about us and the Appeal, the better, so please tell your family and friends about it and our work.

Practical support

Arthritis Care can give practical support to people to help them manage their condition, and can transform lives in the process. Over 3,000 people attended courses last year and gained the skills to keep themselves active, but hundreds more are on waiting lists.

Something can always be done

Increased funds will enable us to train more volunteers to run more courses to help more people. We believe that something can always be done to improve life with arthritis – people do not have to be alone and confused about what can be done.

The Telegraph Appeal will help us to achieve our aims of providing practical help and turning lives around, and ensure we reach as many people who need us as possible.
