Dear Editor

Unfortunately, many of your readers will know someone with arthritis, or will have been diagnosed with it themselves. But, although this disease is, sadly, relatively common and affects 10 million people in the UK, it is still much misunderstood and overlooked. As president of Arthritis Care, I’m grateful to have this opportunity to draw your readers’ attention to Arthritis Care Week, which this year is from 24-30 May.

There are over 200 kinds of arthritis. Many people think it is something that is a ‘natural’ part of ageing, but it can affect people of all ages, including babies and children. Pain is the most common symptom: in fact arthritis is the most frequent cause of chronic pain in the UK. Learning to cope with it can be very distressing and challenging, but I’m delighted to be able to tell your readers that plenty of support is available from my charity – Arthritis Care.

Calling our helpline can be the first step for someone with arthritis in learning to manage their pain and end their isolation. The helpline provides information on all types of arthritis, including treatments and how to manage the symptoms. During Arthritis Care Week, we are offering readers a free Pain Pack, which includes really useful information on how to cope with pain and take control of it, as well as tips on how to live life to the full.

For a confidential chat, support or information I do encourage your readers to ring the helpline free on 0808 800 4050: the opening hours are extended to 9am-5pm weekdays during Arthritis Care Week. Alternatively they can email Helplines@arthritis.org.uk or visit www.arthritiscare.org.uk

So far there isn’t a known cure for arthritis, but Arthritis Care can provide help, information and support to all those affected and those who love them. I do urge anyone affected to get in touch with us and to spread the word to anyone who needs help, especially during Arthritis Care Week. Remember you are not alone.

With best wishes,

Jane Asher
Arthritis Care President
