One of the most striking findings to emerge from our research was that a staggering 81 per cent of the sample said they experience constant pain or are limited in their scope to perform everyday tasks.

This could mean a frightening number of people in the UK are significantly affected by life with OA.

In addition, our research shows:

  • patient awareness of what can be done to help them is low – 34 per cent of people with OA never visit a doctor and almost 50 per cent would need to have frequently unbearable levels of pain before presenting to a doctor
  • diagnosis is slow – with 39 per cent of people being diagnosed between their third and eleventh visits to their GP
  • of those taking prescribed medication, a quarter are also buying over the counter (OTC) treatments.
